EXTRAORDINARY TEXTILES INSPIRED BY JAPAN

“I daydream of creating immersive landscapes with textiles, and of our whole selves being consumed.”

About Rhyannan

Rhyannan is a contemporary textiles artist based in Bristol, United Kingdom.

On the surface her work focuses on adapting a Japanese tradition of shibori - which is a kind of ‘shaped resist dyeing’ or ‘tie and dye’. Each work of shibori is totally unique and cannot be replicated. Her work was shortlisted in 2020 for the KOGEI award, which celebrates innovation in Artisan-Crafts.

Underneath the surface her work is about reviving our connection to fabrics - for we as humanity literally owe them our lives. Rhyannan feels strongly that textiles has radical potential to transform both ourselves and the world we live in. Through slowing down and creating we give ourselves time and space to reflect on these things, and learn some important life lessons from the Japanese.

We need textiles for a socially just and regenerative future. Recalling the ritual and the sacred, listening to the stories they have to tell.
